| HISTORY OF YOUR HORSE: |
Sheza Angel:
This is an AMAZING horse! The sky is her only limit in my heart.
We got her on May 13th 2007. It is hard to believe that she is the bony horse the day I laid eyes on and felt a special connection with. 'Penny 2' [The Texas A&M Grade stock naming system? Odd.] has come so far. At first she seemed like she was never going to warm up to anybody, and just acted like hell was nipping at her heels most of the time. Now I could probably put anybody on her and safely watch as they ride in any place; but I'd advise that it be in a round pen. There are not many horses I've ever known to be sweeter than her. I don't care about the fact that her conformation isn't anywhere near perfect, or even that she is considered to be too small for me. We clicked. I firmly believe that had I not gotten Angel, that I would not have recovered as I have from the neurological syndrome I got two years back. I love my little mare. Anemic [treated daily], hyper, and silly as she is.
Name: Cassia Painted Ghost.
Age: 6-7 years old.
Gender: Mare.
Breed: Thoroughbred.
Height: 16.2 & 1.2hh.
Color: Copper Chestnut Sabino Overo.
My Mom's horse. :) This was a completely different experience from the one we had with Angel. The first time we ever saw Cassia was on a day where there had been flood warnings around for weeks, and my Mom had wanted to go out and see what was available in the area. It was her turn to find a horse, this time. All we saw from the front of the property was a large white face poking out over a fence. It was obvious that she wasn't just a little bit larger then any other horse there, but in comparison to them; gargantuan. Another thing that set her apart from the others was that she was a couple hundred pounds underweight. Though she was in mud up to her hocks we were able to go up to the fence and speak with her for a moment. Afterwards my parents went to go look at the horses that for sure were extremely broke to ride and not in bad health. Nothing really caught their eye like her, but they didn't get any information on how much she was.
We went on continuous searches, and still didn't find anything that appealed all that much. One week later I was browsing the website of the facility that we saw her at, and saw a picture of a familiar horse. It was Dreamer, the gentle giant that my Mom had interest in. Hearing that she was broke to ride, but too thin to test it was enough encouragement. We just couldn't stand to leave her there either. By the time we got back to her all four legs had swollen up with what later would be diagnosed to be a staff infection by our veterinarian. On top of that she nearly foundered and got laminitis. If we hadn't gotten her she'd not be on the planet anymore he said. Even one more day of not being treated or staying there would have killed her. A new name, new hope, and new people were what brought her back to being herself again.
So, three times a day we went to treat her wounds and illness. Slowly, but surely she has returned to being a healthy happy equine. Far from the shy and quiet giant that we bought, too. Now she warms up to people a lot more than she did in the past and is the most vocal horse in the barn.
How Cassia can even trust humans anymore I cannot understand. She is definitely smarter than the average horse and if you don't stick with the program, or are doing something wrong she'll let you know. I don't think she is kid horse material because of her athleticism, but in the future this might change. The first near death experience she had was when she was on the truck to go to the slaughterhouse, but Robbie saved her, only for her to be sold to a man who starved her to near death and getting all sorts of medical problems. Someone definitely has given her professional training with groundwork, she's had a bit in her mouth, and no doubt a saddle on her back. Also, she is very sensitive and it does not take much at all to get her doing whatever you wish. This relaxed demeanor is one of the things my Mom adores about her. We were the third people to rescue her in just six or less years. She won't go through this ever again because we have no intention of ever selling her, as she's already gone through far too much.
I wasn't too surprised to see that she stopped on a dime as well as backed like a professional. She is very easy to handle under saddle, and knows backing like the back of her hoof! I think she'd do well in low level dressage or low level Hunter/Jumper some day.
Name: Secret Again aka Blue
Breed: Thoroughbred.
Color: Dark Bay/Brown.
Sex: Gelding.
Age: 7 years old.
Height: 16hh.
Secret is my Dad's horse and I can't wait to see how he fills out. He's a bit underweight at the moment. Dad has given me permission to show him later on and this makes me really happy. We might be able to win a scholarship at San Antonio next year! I sure hope so. We don't know him exceptionally well yet since we've just had him for three days, but he's a wonderful horse and rides like a professional. Love those OTTBs! |

Hello,
I am an 18 year old freshman at Sul Ross University and if things don't get better this won't be the same by next semester. I really want to transfer to A&M nextyear if I can hang on and make the grades. :(
My balance/equitation isn't perfect because I had guillain barre syndrome three years ago and am still effected by fatiguing easily and balance issues. I have been told that my posture and balance have improved greatly as of late though, so I may be helping the areas lost from cranial nerve damage that effected my balance. All I've been able to do is strive to improve as time goes by and ride as much as possible. Without horses I'd probably not be walking too well since they helped me overcome slight paralysis. After determining that therapeutic western riding might help, I had a half year of Western riding lessons, before having to quit for a half year before jumping back into the equestrian world. I took two weeks worth of English riding lessons before concluding that I needed a stronger basis in Western, so went back to taking Western lessons for now. I plan on attending college for at least four years and graduating with a horse husbandry/equine science degree.
My horse has my heart. Even if she were to become unsound for whatever reason I'd always have a home for her. We've accomplished so much together and I miss her like hell. My heart throbs in pain every time I think about her now.
I work with my Mom's sabino overo Thoroughbred, Cassia who is a rescue horse we adopted a year ago. Every veterinarian we have ever taken her to has been perplexed by her breeding - because of how much she as a Thoroughbred expresses the sabino gene. She has thin soles from founder so is ridden very rarely and lightly.
My Dad has a dark bay/brown OTTB gelding named Secret Again who earned $10,624+ on the track. Not too shabby but racing just wasn't his thing. He is a marvelous mover with a floaty trot and incredible lope. We are probably selling him a few months.
That about sums up my equestrian life. In the real world [I dwell on horses so much it's hard to talk about anything other than well.. horses..] Other than being insanely horse crazy I am not much different from other teenage girls. I love to shop, go to the movies, hang out with my friends, go to the mall, and visit with the family when time allows.
