Yesterdays Horrid Day
Posted On 05/10/2008 12:49:58 by kiester16
I would have written sooner about this... but ive been in SO much pain.

Major had a horrid day yesterday. I got on, and he just wanted to eat. I know that it was my fault because i had been in town all day long so i didnt get the chance to put him out to pasture and i didnt want to put him out to pasture then wait a while to ride because my sis was havein some friends over. So i had to fight with him about that... i decided to start going down the road so i made it to my grandpas when i heard the racecar start up, so i went in the field next to his house to wait for it to go by. But it never came so we circled the field and headed back. i could feel that Major was antsy. and he wanted to GO and i knew from the day before yesterday that when he gets like that he'll do whatever it takes to get you off. And so i MADE him walk until we got past the second field. Then i put him in the ditch and qued him to go. we almost made it to my neighbors drive way when i made him stop becuase i knew that we were gonna go right down the STEEP ditch!! he didnt like that very much. I had him trot on the road and i got to our driveway and he turned... i didnt want to go in the driveway so i kicked him to go forward which he didnt want to do, so he backed up, and pu his head down. I pulled on one rein and that was a MISTAKE! i pulled on the right side and i dont know whats wrong with him and that rein but he flipped! i managed to get him out into the disced field and i wanted him to run away from the house but he WOULD NOT do that. and i knew that i couldnt let him get away with that. I decided i would walk him up to the top of the field run back then get him to trot up the field then run back then have him run up and back. BOY WAS THAT A MISTAKE! i couldnt even get him to WALK the way i wanted him to! he started running and bucking the first time i fell off and i ended up beneath his neck with my arms and legs wrapped around it too!! he was just standing there!! he could hold me!!!
The next time i fell was when i was trying to get on, he pushed me off the dang bucket and it HURT like fire!! then once i got back on he tried to brush me off with a bunch of trees. but i decided i would give lunging a try. I dont have a lunge rope or a whip... so i decided to imprevise. I got a nice thin flimsy stick and atried a bunch of baler twine together. i 'hit' him once when he first started to eat the he started to trot and moved to a different area and i 'hit' him again. this set him off. he started run right at me!!! i yelled at him and smacked him with my hand and he diverted away from me. He would stand infront of me and just started nodding his head i would show him the stick... i even let him smell it... this may sound weird but i even explained to him! but i would tap him on the shoulder then he would start nodding... i tried to get next to him but he would let me!! he eventually just took off running in one direction.... i just had to let the rope go.... there was no way i would be able to hold on!!
After i got him i put his bridle back on and i got back on. I left his halter on this time tho. He ran into the brush WITH ME ON HIM and there was NO way i was going to be able to duck out that and i wasnt smart enough to bail... so i got hit in the throut with a branch and fell back and rolled off!!! then i got back on...
I FINALLY got him out into the fields again and i took him to a different field this time.. he started to RUN toward the cow pasture and i was pullin cuase he put his head down... i went onto his neck... flipped down and fell... the next thing i now im lookin at his belly goin over me and then getting smacked in the chin with a hoof!
My chin is REALLY swelled. My tounge got bit and it is wicked soar. my arms and throut and chin are scratched up along with my back.........
Good news it that i lived! Bad news is that im scared of him now...

OH ouch, you did have a bad day, you sound tough as nails. Maybe you need to go back to a situation that you are more comfortable with. Don't feel bad. All horses are capable of getting the best of us, they are bigger and stronger and so we have to learn to get around that - everyone has stories like this. Fear is your friend at this point. If you have someone who can get on him and tune him up a bit while you heal yourself that would be good. If not - then start working slow with him (preferrably from the ground) and try to get some help to learn about control - it is always smart to let go of the rope when you know you can't gain control -better to catch him later than to get really hurt. You should work with him in your pasture for a while so he doesn't end up in the road. Read all you can - watch some U-tube videos etc... and may the horse be with you!
Keep yourself safe - keep your horse safe.
