I just got a little grade 4 yr old mare that was in rough shape. She was thin, wore a blanket all winter without it being removed for grooming and had very little attention. She was left outside 24/7 with a big bunch of horses and ponies. When i brought her home, i started grooming her twice a day. She finally started shedding out some of that thick winter coat and now she is going bald in some spots all over her body. She does have a really fine soft fuzz on the bald spots though. I dont think she has mange, lice or anything like that since shes not itchy at all and my other horses would have caught something like that by now. I was surprised to see that she has black colored spots on her skin that makes her look like an appaloosa but she was kind of a golden bay color with dark brown legs when i got her. Her spots are now showing up as black on light tan hair. She has a black mane and tail and black hooves, so i have no idea what color she will end up being but she looks weird! Anyone ever hear of a buckskin with black spots?

Ar the bald spots where the blanket was possible rubbing her? Have you had a vet check to rule out ringworm?

As said, check for ring worm and they are not rug rubs. Other possiblities could be seasonal allergies. Also if she hasnt been groomed all winter, this may have kept in bacteria (from sweating) and it could be irritating the skin. You need to have it checked out if it worsens or doesnt go away.

Thanks! The black spots turned out to be scars from being bitten by the other horses! She is growing her hair back normally now! She is a dark buckskin and very pretty!
