I always watch the Kentucky Derby. ALWAYS. But this year I was busy with other things and missed it. Thank GAWD!!! Just hearing about what happened today at the end of the races has me all choked up and I can't stop crying. I feel so awful for everyone who worked with that horse. I feel so awful for the poor horse. I'm so glad I wasn't watching when it happened.
RIP Eight Belles.

I'm glad they don't have much footage of it. I remember in 1990 watching Go For Wand collapse just before the end of the Breeders Cup. Seeing something that horrific live and unexpectedly was traumatizing enough. One of the people I was watching with actually had to get up and run to the bathroom to throw up and everyone else was openly sobbing, even the non horse people. And then the media kept playing the video of that poor horse running down the track on three legs over and over and over for weeks... To this day I can't get the image out of my head and I still get nauseated just thinking of it.
(And if you've never seen it please just take my word for it when I say it was horrific and don't search for it.)
