Hopefully, there are other event riders on this forum but I think the question applies to other disciplines ...
How do you get your body ready for the upcoming show season? I'm trying to go to the gym more and eat the right things but I know my lower back is weak. Any advice on exercises I should be doing?
What is your training plan to get yourself in top shape for show season? (That is, if you haven't maintained yourself in perfect condition since the fall).

Well, what I normally do is right when I start really training my horse again for the season, I, well I guess start training myself. I do kick boxing, which is wonderful for your riding muscles, also I regularly use a medicine ball and do squats or some form of ab work. Peck work I find is also very benifical, so like butterfly presses, or anything where you are pushing up on a bar. Swimming is really great to, I usually try to go to the pool at least twice a week. But really for me what helps is switching up my work out so that you work as many muscle groups as possible. But my favorite would still have to be my kick boxing classes....I have really noticed a difference since I have started to do that.

Pilates is awesome. It really strengthens your core and lets you engage your abs so that you can sit tall, deep, and light in the saddle. Keeps you from clenching with other muscles to try and compensate, so also allows you much more freedom to apply aids independently. So obviously, helps out your horse and his training too. Karen

flexibilty and strength training. It's important to choice exercise that cross train yourbody and build the right kind of muscles. Daniel Stewart has a book that is 'ride right now'( I think )....that liats a bunch of great exercises.
Last year I did to much galloping before the season on the beach and build a lot of long muscle fibers...this made my horse look more TB an less suited for dressage...we spent a lot of time working on suppling and strength building to get our dressage back. Worked well in the end but this year I'm being much more careful about what kind of conditioning I do

I for one have no patience for Pilates or going to the gym - I climb hills at the barn, I will do exercises on my exercise ball at home *great for lower back strengthening* and as mentioned, jogging.
Eventing is really more about Stamina - I know overweight riders who can clear a Prelim Course without huffing and puffing - because their stamina is impecable.
Hill work is great!
