HI All...
I'm a newbie to this site. It seems to be pretty cool and a place I could lose track of time rather quickly!!!
My mare is due on May 06th. I am planning on getting the camera up and running so others can foal watch with me and for me when I cannot be around.
I was wondering if any of you have a camera set up at home and/or online. I'd love to chat with you about your experiences and pick your brain on any tips and hints you can offer.
I'll be sure to post the link to our cam when we get it up!! I would like as many eyes on her as possible to make sure all is well.
Thanks much,
Susan

I was thinking about getting a cam in my barn this year. I have always been the one to set the alarm and run out to check on them. I havent missed one being born yet but it would be so easy just to look at a screen to check on them. But I do have my favorites on marestare that I check on before going to bed and in the morning. Its pretty funny how you get hooked. Make sure you post the link I would love to help you watch.

We had our first foal last year and we did use a camera. It really helped. We actually stayed in the living quarter of our horse trailer which has a TV. It sure made it nicer than having to sleep in the cold barn. I do know wherever you are watching the camera from just be ready to go because it is true about them giving birth so fast. Once our mare went down she had her foal within minutes. There also is a device you insert in the mare and it alarms when she starts foaling. I am not sure of the cost of that. It might be quite expensive. Not sure. If you have anymore questions for me I will be glad to help if I can. Good luck and enjoy. Sue

Howdy from ND
I have used a camera in my barn last foaling season and on the second foal for this year. They are definately handy. I went with a wireless camera system and booster beacause the barn is a 1/4 mile from the house. If I went to purchase a new one I would go with a internet accesable one so that I could check from home or anywhere I am at. Unless you leave the lights on at all times definately make sure you get a top quality camera with infrared sensors so that you can see at all times. Also when ssetting your camera up be aware of background sunlight. With mine I can't see much during the day because of the sunlight when I have the barn doors open. Also if you go with a wireless system be aware of the frequency rateing. My first year was a complete disaster because the camera ran on the same frequency as the cordless phone in the house and also the local cell phone towers raised hell with the reception.
If you have any specific questions I can try and help as much as possible.
Havea great day!
Kent
